What is the Impact of Family Violence Conference Initiative?
For the last 4 years, this initiative has focused in the Greater Toronto Area. This year, as its final year, we are bringing this conference to Ottawa. The initiative has brought together the diverse South Asian population living within the host community with local sectors involved in violence prevention and response, as well as provincial and national partners.
Each new local team builds on the learnings of previous years to design their conference, bringing out hundreds of participants to receive information and training, continue the process of identifying and working on key challenges and an expression of their commitment for ongoing work in this area.
The primary goal is to engage and empower diverse newcomer and immigrant family members- especially youth, women and seniors, relevant mainstream sectors, ethno-specific faith and community groups along with local neighbourhoods in building the capacity of their community and the country as a whole, to develop and implement strategies that will address the specific forms of violence that occurs in South Asian and diverse families.
