The fight against gender-based violence must include women and girls with disabilities too

Violence against women is an on-going epidemic in our country. Data released last year by the Canadian Centre for Justice Statistics in a report on criminal victimization in Canada revealed that sexual assault remains the only crime in Canada for which there has been no decline in the last decade.

In Japan, more women fight to use their own surnames

TOKYO — Japan’s Constitution promises gender equality, and Prime Minister Shinzo Abe says he wants a society where all women can "shine.” But many women say that is hard to do when they cannot even use their own surnames. Under a Japanese law that dates back to the Meiji era, more than a century ago, all married couples must use one surname. In theory, a couple may choose either the husband’s or the wife’s last name, but in practice, 96 percent of women assume their husband’s.

Tunisian coalition party fights for women’s rights with gender violence bill

After 14 years of sexual harassment at work, Idihar Chaieb finally got her day in court. The widow had been repeatedly propositioned and groped by her boss, who was also a local official in her home town of Menzel Bouzelfa, an hour’s drive from Tunis. When he finally got the message that Chaieb wasn’t interested in his advances, he threatened to destroy her reputation.
