On International Women's Day we would like to pay tribute to women worldwide who contribute to the well-being of their families, communities and countries. 2012 also marks CCMW’s 30th year of working for the equality, equity and empowerment of Canadian Muslim women. We would therefore like to take this opportunity to express our appreciation and applaud the hard work of all our members, past and present.
The Canadian Council of Muslim Women (CCMW) condemns the murder of women in the name of family honour or for any other reason. There is zero tolerance in our faith for the murder of another human being. CCMW uses the term customary killing for this type of abhorrent crime, although this term is also not ideal, as we believe there is no honour in killing.
In celebration of International Women’s Day the Canadian Council of Muslim Women (CCMW) has launched two resources for educators and service providers. The first, Being a Canadian Muslim Woman in the 21st Century: Educational Resource Kit, while primarily aimed at educators and teachers in the classroom, can also be used to sensitize service providers such as social workers and physicians, to issues and challenges faced by young Muslim women.. The second, MY Canada: Finding Common Ground was created by and for Muslim youth and those who want to engage with them.
Along with all Canadians, we are shocked to hear of the threats of violence being made by fellow citizens on Canadian and foreign soil. It is a matter of enormous sadness for us that the three accused men are Canadian Muslims. At this time it is futile to defend, apologize or explain that this is against Islam, but we can and do condemn the use of violence to resolve any issues, for it is well known that violence only begets more violence.
This is the presentation of Alia Hogben on behalf of the Canadian Council of Muslim Women at the Canadian Parliamentary Inquiry into Anti-Semitism. The presentation addresses five of the questions which the panel provided as a springboard for discussions.
The Canadian Council of Muslim Women (CCMW) is responding to an urgent call to action from Muslim mothers across Canada. CCMW has initiated a unique forum, leaving it to Muslim youth from across Canada to organize. It is an opportunity for them to explore what it means to be a Canadian Muslim and the many paths they can travel on the road to citizenship, without taking dangerous detours.
