CCMW has signed Equality Now’s petition to support prominent human rights defender Aminetou Mint El-Moctar’s whose life is in danger and she needs help!

Ms. Mint El-Moctar is being targeted by Mr. Yadhih Ould Dahi, a self-proclaimed leader of the “Friends of the Prophet” extremist group, for publicly demeaning a fair trial for a young Mauritian man and for her work to address sexual violence.

Mr. Ould Dahi issued a fatwa calling her her death, but when Ms. Mint El-Moctar alerted the police, they advised her to “discuss it” with him rather than taking steps to protect her! Following the public release of her personal information, Ms. Mint El-Moctar and her children were forced to relocate and engage a full time bodyguard for their protection.

Equality Now and the international human rights community are extremely concerned about the death threats and continued government inaction. Ms. Mint El-Moctar, founder of the Association des Femmes Chefs de Famille, is a relentless champion for women and girls in Mauritania and works to combat all forms of discrimination and violence against women and children, including child marriage, rape, domestic violence and trafficking.
