United Nations report urges Canada to address gender equality barriers

A new report from the United Nations is calling on Canada to get to work on a number of barriers still facing women when it comes to gender equality and urging the government to take more concerted steps to stop violence against indigenous women and girls.

In Japan, more women fight to use their own surnames

TOKYO — Japan’s Constitution promises gender equality, and Prime Minister Shinzo Abe says he wants a society where all women can "shine.” But many women say that is hard to do when they cannot even use their own surnames. Under a Japanese law that dates back to the Meiji era, more than a century ago, all married couples must use one surname. In theory, a couple may choose either the husband’s or the wife’s last name, but in practice, 96 percent of women assume their husband’s.

Poisoned Afghan School Girls’ Questions Remain Unanswered

When I arrived at school that day I noticed all the students standing around the yard. They seemed terrified and nervous. I asked one of my friends if she knew what was going on. “The girls at the school near us have been poisoned. We are afraid to go inside the buildings as our water or classes may have been contaminated as well,” She said.
