Building upon CCMW’s previous anti-violence work, our current two year project with the Status of Women Canada aims to promote gender equality and to tackle violence against women and girls (VAW) through the development of knowledge building resources and community workshops. Working with Pamela Cross, Dr. Asma Barlas, and our Advisory Board, the project seeks to engage Muslim and non-Muslim community members in order to learn about and address the issues of femicide, forced marriage, female genital cutting and domestic violence within their communities.

Publication
Written by Pamela Cross, with a forward by Dr. Asma Barlas, Violence Against Women: Health and Justice for Canadian Muslim Women marks the first phase of our project. This knowledge building resource which includes chapters on Violence Against Women and Girls, Femicide, Female Genital Cutting/Mutilation (FGC/FGM) and Forced Marriage is available for download, along with our fact sheets and toolkit from our Resources section.
Train the Trainer Sessions
Following a series of community consultation and pilot sessions, the project entered its third phase. This past winter, CCMW hosted 3 Train the Trainer sessions in Toronto, Ottawa and Edmonton. 72 dynamic women from across the country were led by Pamela Cross in further building their knowledge and understanding of violence against women, femicide, forced marriage and FGM/FGC as well as community engagement. Participants learned how to mobilize their communities to discuss and address VAW.
Community Workshops
This Spring and Summer, Trainers returned to their local communities where they helped organize workshops with community partners and members. 22 workshops were delivered across Canada, with over 600 (+) individuals from a diversity of backgrounds participated in the sessions which were held at local community centres, Islamic centres, schools and mosques. If you are interested in hosting a workshop at your agency or in your community, please contact us.
