Canadian Muslims Vote in Record Numbers
November 19, 2015 – Ottawa – An estimated 79% of Canadian Muslims voted in the
2015 Federal Election according to a recent post-election poll conducted by
Mainstreet Research. The poll surveyed Muslims from municipalities across Canada
to determine Canadian Muslim voter turnout.
The 79% Canadian Muslim voter turnout significantly exceeds estimates from the
2011 Federal Election, which reported Muslim voter at approximately 46.5%
(Hamdani, Daood, 2015).
Findings from the poll are outlined in a Post-Election Report released and
commissioned by The Canadian-Muslim Vote (TCMV). It documents the impact of
organizations, such as TCMV, in engaging Canadian Muslim voters leading up to the
2015 Federal Election. Although TCMV delivered its message of civic engagement
nationally, it specifically targeted nine ridings across the Greater Toronto Area. The
Report indicated that voter turnout amongst Canadian Muslims in those particular
ridings was a ground breaking 88%.
“We are extremely pleased with Canadian Muslim voter turnout in the 2015 federal
election,” said Muneeza Sheikh, Director of Communications for TCMV. “We hope to
achieve similar results in future elections, at all levels of government, across the
country”.
